CHEST and APCCMPD Announce Recipient of Collaborative Fellow Scholarship

Arnulfo Duarte, DO, will be the mentee for the second year of the APCCMPD and CHEST Medical Educator Scholar Diversity Fellowship

Glenview, Illinois – Arnulfo Duarte, DO, will be the mentee for the second year of the APCCMPD and CHEST Medical Educator Scholar Diversity Fellowship.

Designed to pair a fellow-in-training with an established medical educator, the unique scholarship was launched in 2023 by the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) and the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD) to improve diversity in medical education in pulmonary and critical care.

The program focuses on creating opportunities for fellows at institutions with limited resources to train in teaching, curriculum development, and medical education research by giving them access to mentorship at institutions with those resources to foster their development.

Dr. Duarte is a first-year fellow in the inaugural class of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler academic campus and is interested in simulation-based learning as a transformative approach to medical education.

“Receiving this scholarship would allow me to contribute to the growth of medical education at our institution, where we are establishing a new medical school and a pulmonary and critical care fellowship,” says Dr. Duarte. “With this training, I could play a vital role in shaping the educational framework for medical students, residents, and fellows, ensuring they receive high-quality instruction that supports their development as skilled clinicians.”

Tristan Huie, MD, FCCP, and Anna Neumeier, MD, will be co-mentors for the 2025 program and will work closely with Dr. Duarte to develop a personalized curriculum to obtain the necessary training and expertise to become a medical educator in pulmonary and critical care medicine.

Both Drs. Huie and Neumeier work for the University of Colorado Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine and applied together for the mentor opportunity.

Applications to be a mentor for next year’s APCCMPD and CHEST Medical Educator Scholar Diversity Fellowship will open in early 2025, and information will be available on the APCCMPD website.
