Honor and Memorial Lectures
Honor Lecture Series
The CHEST Honor Lecture Series recognizes chest medicine professionals who have made significant and meritorious contributions in chest medicine. Recipients are recognized for their dedication in advancing the work and/or research in a specific disease state and/or serving as a mentor or a clinician educator. Recipients will present a lecture at CHEST 2025 in Chicago and will receive complimentary registration, along with some travel benefits.
Nomination submissions for honor and memorial lectures must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation (LOR) detailing the nominee’s contributions to the field and their qualifications for the proposed award. LORs must be submitted when completing the nomination form. Upon the nomination, each nominee will be contacted to submit additional nomination materials, including a curriculum vitae (CV).
Nominations for candidates who are not selected in a given year will be carried over for up to two successive years, for a total of three years.

Honor Lecture in Critical Care
Roger C. Bone Memorial Lecture in Critical Care
This lecture honors Roger C. Bone, MD, Master FCCP, and recognizes a leader in critical care and sepsis who promotes physician-patient communication.
Selection criteria
Each nominee will be considered by the selection committee based upon their LOR and CV and upon the following contributions: advancement of critical care, awareness and advancement of end-of-life issues, duration of involvement in the field, and a CHEST member and Fellow (FCCP).
Honor Lecture in COPD
Thomas L. Petty, MD, Master FCCP Memorial Lecture
This lecture honors Thomas L. Petty, MD, Master FCCP, and recognizes a CHEST member for advancing COPD research, COPD treatment, and excellence in mentoring and clinical instruction.
Selection criteria
Each nominee will be considered by the selection committee based upon their LOR and CV and upon the following contributions: a leader in pulmonary and critical care medicine, development of new approaches or therapies to guide medicine, innovation in therapy, duration of work in the field, and a CHEST member.
Honor Lecture in Interventional Pulmonology
Pasquale Ciaglia Memorial Lecture in Interventional Medicine
This lecture honors a CHEST member for their contributions to interventional pulmonary medicine, including innovations in clinical care, economic impact, and research.
Selection criteria
Each nominee will be considered by the selection committee based upon their LOR and CV and upon the following contributions: recognition as an expert in the field of interventional medicine, research of interventional medicine or state-of-art innovation in interventional medicine, duration of involvement in the field, and a CHEST member and Fellow (FCCP).
Honor Lecture in Sarcoidosis
Om P. Sharma, MD, Master FCCP Memorial Lecture
This lecture honors Om P. Sharma, MD, Master FCCP, and recognizes a leader for contributions to and advancing treatment of sarcoidosis and granulomatous disorders.
Selection criteria
Each nominee will be considered by the selection committee based upon their LOR and CV and upon the following contributions: clinical practice and/or research in sarcoidosis or other granulomatous disorders, innovation in advancing evaluation and treatment, mentorship, duration of work in the field, and a CHEST member and Fellow (FCCP).
Honor Lecture in Home-Based Mechanical Ventilation
Margaret Pfrommer Endowed Memorial Lecture in Home-Based Mechanical Ventilation
Established in 1999 by Drs. Eveline Faure and Allen I. Goldberg, this lecture honors Margaret Pfrommer, a polio survivor and advocate. It recognizes a clinician, ventilator-dependent professional, or advocate who has advanced mechanical ventilation and strengthened physician-patient partnerships.
Selection criteria
Each nominee will be considered by the selection committee based upon their LOR and CV and upon the following contributions: patient advocacy for issues pertaining to home mechanical ventilation, integration of care of patients receiving home mechanical ventilation, impact of work on quality of care of patients being supported by home mechanical ventilation, and duration of involvement in the field.
This lecture is jointly supported by CHEST and the International Ventilator Users Network of Post-Polio Health International.
Honor Lecture in Patient-Focused Care
Richard S. Irwin, MD, Master FCCP Honor Lecture
This lecture honors Richard S. Irwin, MD, Master FCCP, for his contributions to pulmonary and critical care medicine, emphasizing patient-centered care and shared decision-making and valuing patient preferences. It is awarded to a clinician or health care provider who has advanced patient-focused care in chest medicine.
Selection criteria
Each nominee will be considered by the selection committee based upon their LOR and CV and upon the following contributions: a leader in pulmonary and critical care medicine, advocating for patients, research and/or practice improvements in advancing patent-focused care, duration of work in the field, and a CHEST member.
Honor Lecture in Medical Education and Leadership
Mark J. Rosen, MD, Master FCCP Memorial Lecture
This lecture honors a CHEST educator who reflects Dr. Mark Rosen's passion for education and leadership. It recognizes a clinician educator, mentor, and leader in pulmonary and critical care medicine who is dedicated to fostering leaders, advancing medical education, and promoting international collaboration.
Selection criteria
Each nominee will be considered by the selection committee based upon their LOR and CV and upon the following contributions: service as a clinician educator (nationally/internationally), a leader within CHEST and the chest medicine community, fostering clinician leaders, duration of work in the pulmonary and critical care medicine field, and a CHEST member and Fellow (FCCP).
Honor Lecture in Clinician Education
Edward C. Rosenow III, MD, Master FCCP/Master Teacher Memorial Lecture
This lecture honors Edward C. Rosenow III, MD, Master FCCP, and recognizes advanced clinician educators for their contributions to mentoring and fostering the development of chest medicine professionals and to improving patient care.
Selection criteria
Each nominee will be considered by the selection committee based upon their LOR and CV and upon the following contributions: a role model, training and development of pulmonary and critical care medicine colleagues, growth and development of CHEST and its educational mission, duration of involvement in the field, and a CHEST member and Fellow (FCCP).
