Q&A With John Coleman III, MD, FCCP

John Coleman III, MD, FCCP

Home-Based Mechanical Ventilation and Neuromuscular Section Vice-Chair
CHEST member since 2012

August 5, 2024

Where do you work?
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

What are your research interests?
My research interests are the management of chronic respiratory failure with both invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation.

What led you to join your Network?
CHEST has a long history of excellent care for home mechanical ventilation and is the only society with a Network dedicated to this field. It is a great experience to meet and collaborate with health care providers in this very small but much needed field.

What achievements are you most proud of contributing to within your Network?
Over the last several years, there have been many changes in the field of home mechanical ventilation between device recalls and insurance coverage, and I am proud of the timely work we have done to update not only our Network members but all members of CHEST.

How has being in a Network benefited your career and your experience as a CHEST member?
The CHEST Networks offer great opportunities to meet and collaborate with those with the same clinical interests as you. Over the last several years, I have had the opportunity to not only collaborate on multiple review papers and guidelines but also have gained experience in presenting at international conferences.

What are your hobbies?
My hobbies are cooking, exercise, traveling, and spending time with my husband and family.

What is something you cannot live without (after family and friends)?
Exercise and music. After my family and friends, those both help recenter me.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your Network peers?
I am so proud to be part of the CHEST Networks. It is an amazing opportunity to really find your tribe in pulmonary medicine, and I have made many great friends and collaborators.
