Drs. Matthew Miles and Hayley Gershengorn named as editors in chief for CHEST Pulmonary and CHEST Critical Care
October 17, 2022
Glenview, Illinois – During the CHEST Annual Meeting 2022, the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) announced Matthew Miles,
MD, FCCP, and Hayley Gershengorn, MD, as the two editors in chief to launch
and lead two new open access journals.
Set to launch in early 2023, the journals, CHEST Pulmonary and CHEST Critical Care, will contain specialized research in
pulmonary and critical care medicine and join the flagship journal CHEST® in the college’s portfolio.
Dr. Miles, the Editor in Chief of CHEST Pulmonary is Associate
Professor of Medicine in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine with Atrium
Health Wake Forest Baptist and the Wake Forest School of Medicine in
Winston-Salem, NC, where he maintains an active clinical practice in
general pulmonology and critical care medicine. He holds a Master’s in
Education and Curriculum Development from the University of Cincinnati and
is Director of the Wake Forest Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
fellowship program.
“I’m looking forward to leveraging my clinical and academic experience and
my work as an educator to launch and run this new publication,” says Dr.
Miles. “I believe CHEST Pulmonary can provide an accessible and
engaging home for chest clinicians to find trusted education that expands
the reach of the flagship journal CHEST.”
Dr. Gershengorn, the Editor in Chief of CHEST Critical Care, is a
Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care,
and Sleep Medicine at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine,
where she works as a medical intensivist. She serves as Medical Director of
Data Quality Analytics and Critical Care Quality for the University of
Miami Hospital and Clinics. Dr. Gershengorn’s research program focuses on
the allocation of ICU resources and the impact such allocation has on the
outcomes of critically ill patients.
“My position as a leader within many critical care-focused societies has
given me great insight into our diverse workforce and the needs of our
community,” says Dr. Gershengorn. “I look forward to utilizing this
opportunity with CHEST’s first open access journals to advance equitable
access to high-quality research.”
Peter Mazzone, MD, FCCP, Editor in Chief of the flagship journal CHEST, will oversee both positions.
“We reviewed a great number of qualified applicants for these roles,” says
Dr. Mazzone. “Drs. Miles and Gershengorn both stood out for their
leadership qualities, communication skills, vision and their significant
accomplishments within scientific publishing. I expect them to do an
excellent job launching and leading these new journals.”
Similar to the flagship journal, CHEST Pulmonary and CHEST Critical Care will accept submissions of original research,
reviews, case reports and commentaries, with enhanced emphasis on medical
decision-making, implementation science, health services delivery, quality
improvement, cost-effectiveness analysis, policy reports, study design and
more. With the new journals, readers will have additional sources of
high-quality research, with the benefit of open-access.
First launched as Diseases of the Chest in 1935, the journal CHEST distributes the latest original research, practice
management guidance, editorials, reviews and letters. Originally focused on
tuberculosis, the journal CHEST has continually evolved to serve
clinicians and their patients as the fields of pulmonary, critical care and
sleep medicine grow and change over time.
