Where do you work?
I am employed by Consensus Health, a large multispecialty medical group in New Jersey, as the Director of their Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Medicine Program. I admit patients to and do procedures at Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center. I am also a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
What are your research interests, and how does this apply to your position within the Networks?
My primary areas of interests have varied over the years but generally relate to heart and lung transplantation, immunosuppression, pulmonary hypertension, ECMO, and infiltrative heart disease.
How did you become interested and involved in the Pulmonary Vascular and Cardiovascular Network?
I was introduced to CHEST as an internal medicine resident, and although a cardiologist by training, I have always considered my fellowship at CHEST to be critical to my career for the simple reason that my interests and the organization’s overlap; that is, the organization offers unmatched opportunities to interact with other clinicians with the same or similar interests as mine. A few years back, one of my cardiology critical care colleagues reached out and asked if I would be willing to take on a leadership role in the organization by joining, and now chairing, a Section Network. I enthusiastically accepted.
Are you involved in any other activities or volunteer positions at CHEST?
I am involved in abstract and program review.
What clinical research is most interesting to you right now?
Treatment of amyloid and sarcoid heart disease.
What are your hobbies?
Flying airplanes when time permits.
What is something you cannot live without (after family and friends)?
I am pretty easy-going and relatively low-maintenance—there is nothing I cannot live without.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with your Network peers?
I grew up in New York City, was an undergraduate at McGill University in Montreal, and went to medical school at Northwestern where I did all my clinical training prior to joining the faculty at Loyola in Chicago. I have lived in New Jersey for 33 years.
Beyond being a physician, I am an attorney admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey. As such, I have spent considerable amounts of time working with defense counsel and, in years past, handling simple contractual matters for graduating residents and fellows.
