This program will include modules related to Education about lung cancer screening and tobacco treatment, assessment of eligibility for screening and tobacco treatment, shared decision-making about lung cancer screening, and using a decision support tool. We are working to identify areas of need for lung cancer screening outreach, identifying Jefferson practices that serve those areas to scale up the outreach. The target audience for this program includes primary care physicians and other healthcare providers, including NPs, PAs, and Respiratory Care workers. The information from this program will assist healthcare workers with identifying eligible patients for lung cancer screening and employing proper shared decision-making to help patients decide whether screening is right for them or not.

Course Objectives

After completing this online course, you will be able to:

Identify eligibility criteria in CMS and USPSF recommendations.
Complete documentation with all necessary information in the chart, including eligibility for LCS and tobacco cessation, and referral for tobacco treatment.
Identify major lung cancer risk factors.
Describe the use of low dose computed tomography (LDCT) to identify early lung cancers. and explain the benefits and risks of screening.
Describe the importance of tobacco treatment for patients with a current pack year history and identify information about low- or no-cost resources for tobacco treatment.
Identify steps in the shared decision-making process.
Identify the reasons patients may or may not choose to be screened.
Determine what the patient wants to do.

This training program complements both centralized and decentralized lung cancer screening by educating learners to identify persons eligible for screening and to guide those who are eligible through shared decision making. After completing the program, learners in health systems with a centralized program should feel confident about making referrals to that program, and learners in health systems with decentralized screening should feel confident about ordering lung cancer screening for interested patients.

Physician Credit

The American College of Chest Physicians is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American College of Chest Physicians designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn up to 1.25 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC points.
