Putting Pressure on Unauthorized e-Cigarette Products

In a joint letter organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) and other public health-minded associations urge the regulation and enforcement of unauthorized e-cigarette products coming into the U.S.

Sent directly to leaders at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB), the letter encourages the enforcement agencies to use all the tools at their disposal to clear the market of unauthorized e-cigarette products, including flavored products.

To bring this problem under control, the signing organizations recommend the adoption of several concrete changes, including:

  • The DOJ must prioritize tobacco product enforcement, and the process for bringing actions for injunctive relief must be streamlined.
  • CPB must prioritize efforts to stop illegal importation of unauthorized products.
  • Enforcement actions must be brought against all parties in the supply chain.
