Sleep medicine specialists attending CHEST 2024 will gain fresh insights on a range of issues in the field, from the common (sleep apnea, anyone?) to the cutting-edge, notes Chitra Lal, MD, MBBS, FCCP, Chair of the Sleep Medicine Curriculum Group.

“The latest and greatest advances in sleep medicine are going to be presented here,” Dr. Lal said. “We’ll cover some of the newer developments in the sleep world, like hypoglossal nerve stimulation, and also the changing world of sleep medicine with device withdrawals.”

As a perennial “bread and butter” issue in sleep medicine, OSA also will be a topic of frequent discussion, she noted.

This year, it was critically important to have sessions that addressed the challenge of several positive airway pressure (PAP) devices being recently removed from the American marketplace—a problem many sleep medicine specialists are confronting.

“We’ll discuss what sleep physicians have to look out for, and we’ll be discussing how to assist them in taking care of their patients in light of the withdrawals,” Dr. Lal said.

“There's something for everybody in the sleep curriculum,” Dr. Lal said. “And this is a wonderful opportunity not only to learn about the latest advances in sleep medicine but also to develop some wonderful relationships with colleagues and potential mentors in the field—people who are really renowned in sleep medicine.”
