Medical technology is always evolving, and, this year, artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be accelerating those changes. It’s an area of keen interest among clinicians and one of many hot topics on the educational agenda for the upcoming CHEST Annual Meeting 2024, October 6 to 9 in Boston.
“We’re still trying to figure out where these AI technologies are in their evolution and how we can apply them to do a better job taking care of patients,” said Jason Akulian, MD, FCCP, Chair of the Lung Cancer/Interventional Pulmonary/Radiology Curriculum Group. “Those ideas are really exciting and interesting.”
Along with AI, other hot topics at CHEST will include a discussion on treating nodules with ablation and the evolving field of peripheral diagnostics.
“The capabilities that are now being provided to us by robots and other types of adjunct imaging during the perioperative phase are amazing. So getting a sense as to where the field is moving, and where it currently is, is really key,” Dr. Akulian said.

No matter the topic, all the sessions will have something to offer both physicians and advanced practice providers.
“The level of practice that’s being delivered by nonphysician providers is growing by leaps and bounds,” Dr. Akulian said. “And so literally all of the CHEST 2024 offerings are applicable whether you’re a physician or an RT or a PA or nurse or a fellow—you’re going to get something from every talk.”
This includes people who are new to the field.
“I’ve been attending CHEST since I was a resident in internal medicine and always found it an open and welcome event. Trainees have a lot to gain by spending time not just with fellows but internal medicine residents who are interested in pulmonary and critical care medicine,” he said.
Now a seasoned veteran, Dr. Akulian is still impressed by how much he soaks up at meetings. It’s not just the extensive educational curriculum he values. There are also the fantastic networking opportunities and resulting research and collaborative projects that come out of them.
“People who are interested in the depth and breadth of pulmonary medicine, specifically in lung cancer, interventional pulmonology, or imaging, should attend the CHEST Annual Meeting,” he said. “It is invaluable to touch base with content experts and learn from them.”
