As we look ahead to CHEST 2024 on October 6 to 9 in Boston, we took a moment to speak to Muhammad Adrish, MD, MBA, FCCP, Chair of the Airways Disease Curriculum Group and the Airways Disorders Network, about what he’s looking forward to at the event.

Of course, Dr. Adrish is eager to catch up with colleagues and take advantage of networking opportunities. But most of all, it’s the chance to learn about advancements in the field that has him looking forward to CHEST 2024. Take a look at some of the topics, sessions, and themes in airways disorders Dr. Adrish is anticipating.

Attending sessions on hot-button topics

By attending CHEST 2024, you’ll get to tap into discussions on big topics in the field, including:

• Artificial Intelligence: In the medical field, as in other industries and professions, artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful force. There will be several sessions with a focus on AI, such as Artificial Intelligence in Interstitial Lung Disease Imaging - The Future Is Here.
• Precision Medicine: Also exciting are new precision medicine therapies that are available for both patients with asthma and COPD. “I’m very excited about the direction that we are moving with precision medicine,” Dr. Adrish said. One of the key sessions in this area is Precision Medicine in ILD: From Telomeres to Treatable Traits—Are We Ready? A Pro-Con Debate.
• Biologics Guidelines: You’ll also have an opportunity to hear from experts on forthcoming guidelines on biologics in asthma. This topic is “highly relevant to our providers because of the challenges that arise due to the absence of head-to-head trials between different biologics,” Dr. Adrish said. Some sessions on this topic include Advanced Management Strategies in Severe Asthma and COPD, Problem-Based Learning: Mastering Biologics in Asthma, and Biologics in Asthma: Sessions 1 and 2.

Witnessing lively debates

Personally, Dr. Adrish is looking forward to the pro-con debates that are on the schedule, including pulmonary function testing with new guidelines for race-neutral pulmonary function tests and initial inhaler and biologic choices for patients with asthma and COPD.

“These debates touch upon the uncertainty that we face as clinicians every day of our lives,” he said. Dr. Adrish believes these pro-con conversations—which won’t shy away from hard topics—will generate a lot of interest among attendees.

Caring for patients across the lifespan

This year marks a transition in airways coverage for asthma and COPD during CHEST 2024. “What's unique is that we will have a breadth of curriculum across all ages and genders,” Dr. Adrish said.

Pulmonologists treating both pediatric and adult patients will gain insights at the sessions. The sessions will also provide an opportunity for collaboration between pediatric and adult pulmonologists, who often see the same patients but at different points in their lives.

“We have quite a few sessions that are focusing on this transition of care from the pediatric to adult population,” Dr. Adrish said.

Hearing from a variety of perspectives

Expect to hear from many different voices and perspectives on airways topics at CHEST 2024.

Speakers will represent the wide range of expertise on the care team, Dr. Adrish said. You’ll hear from a variety of specialists—pulmonologists, of course, but also pediatricians, rheumatologists, plastic surgeons, and more are slated to be on panels.

“We’re going to have a lot of multidisciplinary discussions where we have experts from all different fields coming in and discussing topics of importance in airway diseases,” Dr. Adrish said.
