ACCP Fact Sheet

ACCP Policy Statement

Literature regarding over-the-counter cough medications does not support the efficacy of such products in the pediatric age group (defined as less than 15 years of age by the ACCP). These medications often include combinations of cough suppressants, such as codeine and dextromethorphan, as well as antihistamines or decongestants. Moreover, it is clear that, when taken in excessive doses, these medications have the potential to kill. Therefore, as was its recommendation in January 2006, the ACCP does not recommend the use of these medications in children, and it applauds the FDA's review of the safety and effectiveness of over-the-counter cough suppressants for this population.

The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) is a not-for-profit medical society representing 16,500 members in over 100 countries.   Members include specialist physicians, allied health professionals, and PhDs focusing on diseases of the chest.

ACCP's mission is to promote the prevention and treatment of diseases of the chest through leadership, education, research, and communication.

Background: The American College of Chest Physicians has set the standard in clinical chest medicine since 1935.   Specialists in pulmonology and respiratory care, sleep medicine, thoracic surgery, cardiology, and critical care, ACCP members are committed to improving cardiopulmonary health worldwide.   The ACCP was among the first organizations to issue warnings about the dangers of cigarette smoking.

Education: Education to improve patient care is the most important mission of the ACCP.   The ACCP delivers high-quality continuing medical education (CME) in person, in print, and online.   Each year, the ACCP offers numerous educational courses on all aspects of chest medicine.   The CHEST annual meeting provides opportunities to share innovative clinical research and earn required CME credits.

Advocacy: ACCP works with elected officials on activities and legislation affecting chest medicine.   Members' views on tobacco regulation, graduate medical education, Medicare reimbursement, research funding, and other health-care reform proposals are represented before Congress and state and local policymakers.   The ACCP keeps its members updated on the political and socioeconomic issues influencing their practice and research.

The CHEST Foundation: Founded in 1996 as the philanthropic arm of the ACCP, The CHEST Foundation provides resources to advance the prevention and treatment of diseases of the chest.
