Presidents and Master Fellows

President: Kalpalatha K. Guntupalli, MD, FCCP, is a Professor and Chief, Pulmonary/Critical Care and Sleep Section, at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. She received her medical degree from the Institute of Medical Sciences, Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India, and completed her internal medicine residency at DC General Hospital and pulmonary and critical care fellowships at Georgetown University and the University of Pittsburgh, respectively. Dr. Guntupalli served on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and Emory University prior to joining Baylor in 1988. Dr. Guntupalli has served ACCP in many capacities, including Regent-at-Large; Chair of the Critical Care Institute; Chair of Women’s Health NetWork; member of the CHEST Program Committee; and trustee of The CHEST Foundation. She currently serves as The CHEST Foundation's Second Distinguished Scholar in Critical Care Medicine. Her academic interests include ARDS and critical care education tools. She has developed antitobacco education material in seven languages and antitobacco cartoons for children in three languages, inspiring more than 200,000 children. Dr. Guntupalli is the recipient of numerous awards, including the “Parker J. Palmer Courage To Teach” award from the ACGME, and “Master of American College of Physicians" (MACP) award from the ACP. Dr. Guntupalli believes in fostering a culture of a “global family” of health caregivers to deliver the best of care to all patients and make meaningful contributions to society.

Immediate Past President: James A. L. Mathers, Jr., MD, FCCP, is a partner with Pulmonary Associates of Richmond, in Richmond, VA, and has 27 years of private practice experience in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. Dr. Mathers received his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He completed a medical residency at Maine Medical Center, Portland, then returned to Columbia University for his pulmonary fellowship. Dr. Mathers has served the ACCP in numerous leadership roles, some of which include: two terms as Regent-at-Large on the Board of Regents, two terms on the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents, Trustee of The CHEST Foundation, Regent Representative to NAMDRC, Chair of the Government Relations Committee, and Chair of the Critical Care Work Group. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Mathers has worked with our sister societies, legislators, and regulatory agencies to remove barriers to appropriate care for patients with diseases of the chest. Dr. Mathers believes that a shortage of chest physicians, in particular those practicing critical care medicine, is a significant problem facing our membership and society. He expects to address the issues of a shortfall of critical care physicians, new educational requirements for CME, and onerous regulatory requirements over the next 2 years.
