Criteria for ACCP Government Relations Committee Membership

The ACCP Government Relations Committee (GRC) is charged with the following:

  • Identifying legislative and regulatory issues deemed important to ACCP members’ ability to care for their patients.
  • Requesting input from ACCP members with expertise on issues under review.
  • Prioritizing, developing, and implementing appropriate advocacy plans.
  • Making recommendations to the appropriate ACCP Committee(s) Councils, and NetWork(s) for action.
  • Providing ongoing education to ACCP members about legislative issues and advocacy.
  • Communicating recommendations and actions to appropriate audiences.
  • Assisting ACCP Governors and members in building strong relationships with key members of Congress.

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates for appointment to the GRC must be ACCP members in good standing, ACCP Grassroots Advocates, and have some experience advocating at either the grassroots and/or federal levels (eg, attending an ACCP Capitol Hill Caucus, independently meeting with legislators in their district and/or on the Hill).  Although not a requirement for appointment, ideal candidates also will have established relationships with legislators, legislative staff, and/or members of the media to assist the ACCP in its advocacy efforts.

Responsibilities of GRC Members:

  • Actively participate in at least eight out of the 10 monthly GRC conference calls. (If you are unable to participate, please notify Terri Berman, ACCP Health Affairs, at tberman@chestnet.org.)
  • Actively participate in the GRC meeting(s) at CHEST.
  • Participate in the ACCP Capitol Hill Caucus held each spring in Washington, DC (full travel grants provided to GRC members).
  • Participate in all live ACCP advocacy Webinars or subsequently review Webinars online.
  • Participate in all relevant ACCP Action Alerts.
  • Visit at least one of your federal legislators in his or her district office each year.
  • Invite at least one of your federal legislators to visit your hospital or clinic to see, as well as hear about, the challenges chest physicians currently face.
  • Participate in at least one congressional town hall meeting.
  • Mentor the relevant ACCP Governor(s) in your state(s) regarding effective advocacy.
  • Recruit five ACCP Grassroots Advocates.   The ACCP staff will provide support, as necessary, to assist GRC members with fulfilling their responsibilities, including tracking GRC member participation and sending relevant reminders and tips for effective advocacy.

All applicants should submit the materials listed below to Lynne Marcus, VP of Health Affairs at lmarcus@chestnet.org or fax: (847) 498-5460.
