Education Program
ACCP Simulation Center
The ACCP Simulation Center will enhance your learning in a hands-on clinical environment. The newly expanded center will feature a variety of simulation exercises, so you can actively practice your skills and apply your knowledge in realistic scenarios. The center will feature technologically sophisticated equipment and skilled faculty to help you develop the cognitive, technical, and behavioral skills needed for optimal patient care across a variety of situations. Simulation exercises will be conducted in five areas:
ACCP Simulation Center Schedule
Monday, October 27 – Wednesday, October 29
8:00 am – 9:00 am Open Forum
All attendees invited.
9:30 am – 12:00 pm Scheduled Session 1
Attendees registered for Session 1 admitted.
1:00 pm – 2:00 pm Open Forum
All attendees invited.
2:30 pm – 5:00 pm Scheduled Session 2
Attendees registered for Session 2 admitted.
Open Forum
Visit the ACCP Simulation Center during expanded open forum times to learn how simulation exercises can enhance your education. Faculty will illustrate how simulations create realistic, relevant learning experiences and will offer hands-on time with the equipment. All attendees are welcome to attend open forum times.
Scheduled Sessions
Register for a scheduled session to actively participate in an intensive learning opportunity. Due to the structured nature of these sessions, only registered attendees will be admitted to the simulation center during scheduled times. All scheduled sessions will begin with a pretest and survey to assess your knowledge, experience, and comfort level in a range of clinical situations. A variety of simulation exercises will then be conducted. Constructive feedback will be given throughout the simulation time, so you can continually monitor and improve your performance. A posttest and survey following the simulations will help you identify strengths and needs related your clinical skills.
Registration Information
Register online only. Separate online registration and a fee are required for participation in scheduled sessions in the ACCP Simulation Center. If you register for CHEST 2008 by mail, fax, or phone, you must register online for a scheduled session. Space is limited, so register early. No refunds or exchanges will be permitted. Scheduled sessions will begin promptly. There will be no admittance to the simulation center once sessions.
ACCP Simulation Center Session Descriptions
Airway Management in the Critical Care Unit
Every intubation in the ICU can potentially be a difficult airway. This simulation workshop will provide a hands-on experience on the preparation, teamwork, and tools to manage common and complex airway situations. You will review the fundamental skills of intubation, identify exam findings associated with a difficult airway, use advanced tools for airway management, and work with the team to solve airway problems with a high fidelity human simulator using scenarios taken from real-life clinical cases.

Patient Management in the Critical Care Unit
Gain valuable exposure to early goal-directed management of a patient in shock. Emphasis will be on diagnosis, monitoring, and management of patients in shock based on current evidence-based medicine treatment guidelines. The workshop will incorporate use of problem-based learning, a team-driven patient simulation, interactive debriefing enhanced with video recordings, and reflective evaluation of the experience. The faculty will consist of board-certified physicians, a pharmacist, an advanced practice nurse, and a nurse/respiratory therapist. [back]
Pulmonary Function Testing in the Pulmonary Unit
Learn the techniques associated with the performance and interpretation of pulmonary function testing. During the session, you will perform various aspects of PFT, and feedback on your performance will be given. In addition, you will interpret selected case-based examples of PFT results (ie, flow rates, lung volumes, and diffusing capacity). Feedback on your interpretations will be provided by the faculty. Ultrasonography in the ICU
Experience the vital applications of ultrasonography in critical care medicine. This session will offer hands-on training in image acquisition and interpretation to increase your skill in diagnostic ultrasound of the critically ill. Expert faculty will provide focused training in thoracic, vascular, cardiac, and abdominal ultrasonography, using high quality machines and human models. The session will emphasize clinical application of skills at the bedside of critically ill patients. All faculty will have strong experience in hands-on training in critical care ultrasonography. Polysomnography in the Sleep Lab
Review instrumentation and participate in the hook-up of a patient for polysomnography. A variety of polysomnography studies will be reviewed online to highlight the new AASM scoring rules, artifacts, disordered-breathing, and other sleep-related events.
