Fundamental Disaster Management/Humanitarian Assistance
This day-long course, an ancillary offering through the US Navy and the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), will employ the SCCM Fundamental Disaster Management (FDM) course in a setting conducive to understanding global humanitarian assistance activities. FDM goals are to: (1) better equip critical care professionals to manage large-scale disasters and the resultant patient surge; and (2) apply an all-hazards approach to an in-hospital setting and project resources in response to a mass casualty incident. Topics will include critical care management and mass casualty care for burns and explosions, radiologic and chemical exposures, response to natural disasters, disaster triage and allocation of resources, and considerations for special populations. Hands-on stations will include exploration of the “virtual ventilator,” ventilators from the Strategic National Stockpile, and a practical review of hospital personal protective equipment (PPE) used in ICUs. This course will be held on the US Navy’s Battleship USS Peleliu.

Where We Are and Where We Need To Be
Jay Sanders, MD
It is clear that the standard processes by which a patient is evaluated, diagnosed, and treated today is fundamentally flawed. An analysis of how today’s practices need to change demonstrates that telecommunication and information technologies that are used by other service industries can dramatically improve both the process and outcome of health-care delivery for both the patient and practitioner.
