Presidents

The CHEST President, President-Elect, President-Designate, and Immediate Past President serve on the CHEST Board of Regents, our governing body.

President: Jack D. Buckley, MD, MPH, FCCP

Jack D. Buckley, MD, MPH, FCCP

Jack D. Buckley, MD, MPH, FCCP, is a pulmonologist and critical care physician with an extensive background in education. Dr. Buckley is a Professor of Medical Education at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker, MD School of Medicine. Previously, he has served as a Pulm/CCM program director at both Henry Ford Hospital and Indiana University, and also held leadership positions in clinical care at Indiana University Health and Division Head of Pulm/CCM at Henry Ford.

Dr. Buckley received his undergraduate degree from Kalamazoo College and medical degree from Wayne State University. His residency in internal medicine and fellowships in pulmonary and critical care and health services research were completed at Indiana University. He additionally earned a Master of Public Health degree, also from Indiana University.

His impressive academic record includes authoring or co-authoring more than 40 publications and book chapters, as well as presenting over 100 lectures at international conferences. As a former fellowship program director at two institutions, Dr. Buckley has long been committed to championing and furthering pulmonary and critical care medical education. In collaboration between the Chinese Thoracic Society and CHEST, he served 6 years on a steering committee to help establish pulmonary and critical care medicine as a subspecialty in China. He and the group assisted with the development of fellowship training programs and presented at several Chinese Thoracic Society annual meetings and board review events. Dr. Buckley served as the keynote speaker for the annual meeting of the Chinese Thoracic Society in 2012.

For Dr. Buckley’s dedication to advancing PCCM education and faculty development, he received the CHEST Master Clinician Educator Award in 2016 and has been an annual Distinguished CHEST Educator (DCE) recipient since the award’s inception in 2017. He was also the recipient of the Presidential Honor Lecture at CHEST 2022.

Dr. Buckley has been an active and engaged member of CHEST since 1997. He has served in leadership roles across many domains of the organization, including CHEST 2020 Congress Italy, Chair of the CHEST 2013 Scientific Program Committee, Board of Regents, Compensation Committee, Governance Committee, Training and Transitions Committee (Chair, 2011-2012), Bylaws Committee (Chair, 2010-2012), Honor Lecture and Awards Committee, and as Chair of the Pulmonary Medicine Board Review (2022-2023). He currently serves on the CHEST SEEK™ Pulmonary Medicine Editorial Board.

Dr. Buckley serves as the 86th President of the American College of Chest Physicians.

President-Elect: John Howington, MD, MBA, FCCP

John Howington, MD, MBA, FCCP

John Howington, MD, MBA, FCCP, is a practicing thoracic surgeon currently at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale, Washington.

Dr. Howington received his undergraduate degree from Tennessee Technological University and medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Missouri, Kansas City and thoracic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Most recently, he received his Physician Executive MBA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Dr. Howington has participated and published more than 49 research publications and guidelines, numerous book chapters, and has presented hundreds of lectures internationally. As a passionate thoracic surgeon, he has lent his knowledge to the extensive CHEST lung cancer guideline portfolio for more than a decade. He offers regular leadership in multidisciplinary and executive forums and has spearheaded a series of quality improvement initiatives at Ascension. He has served in a variety of leadership roles with CHEST and with other national thoracic surgery societies.

Dr. Howington began his CHEST leadership journey with the Networks, as member of the Interventional Chest Medicine Steering Committee and then as Thoracic Oncology Network Chair (2008-2010). Other leadership positions include serving as the President of the CHEST Foundation (2014-2016), Member of the Scientific Program Committee, Membership Committee, and, most recently, as the Chair of the Finance Committee from 2018-2021. Since 2017, he has served on the Board of Regents as a Member at Large. Dr. Howington will serve as the 87th CHEST President in 2025.

President-Designate: Neil J. Freedman, MD, FCCP

Neil J. Freedman, MD, FCCP

Neil S. Freedman, MD, FCCP, is a pulmonary, critical care, and sleep physician with a background in clinical care, health care leadership, quality, financial oversight, education, and advocacy. He currently serves in a senior leadership role at Endeavor Health as the President of NorthShore Medical Group, leading a multispecialty practice of 1,100 primary care and specialty physicians throughout the Chicagoland region. He also is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Dr. Freedman received his undergraduate degree at Washington and Jefferson College and medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He completed his residency and fellowship in pulmonary, critical are, and sleep medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Over the past 2 decades, Dr. Freedman’s clinical and leadership experiences have spanned the spectrum of private practice, system-employed physicians, and leadership roles, including Division Head for Pulmonary and Critical Care for over 8 years, President of two separate professional staffs, and system oversight of acute care medicine. He has overseen credentialing, hospital quality, professional staff development, physician compensation, and NorthShore’s acute care provider care models and strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently within his institution, he helps lead initiatives focused on recruiting, retaining, developing, and promoting underrepresented medical physicians and supports and participates as a mentor in the Women in Medicine Group and Mentorship Program within the Northshore Medical Group.

Dr. Freedman has had the honor of participating as faculty or chair for more than 300 presentations at national and international meetings on the topics of sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, and the business of medicine and has been recognized for his educational efforts with the Distinguished CHEST Educator designation from 2017-2023. He has been extremely active within the leadership of CHEST and has held CHEST leadership positions across the organization since 2006, most notably including the following: on the Education Committee, Sleep Medicine Network Chair, Chair of the CHEST 2016 Annual Meeting, CHEST Foundation Board of Trustees member, Deputy Editor of SEEK Sleep Medicine (2014), member of the Joint Finance Oversight Committee (2008-2017), member and Chair of the Sleep Medicine Board Review Course (2009-2016), and Chair of the Health Policy and Advocacy Committee (2020-2021). He has served as an at-large member of the Board of Regents over the past 5 years and currently serves as the Chair of the Oxygen Access and Education Work Group, Chair of the Finance Committee, and member of the Compensation Committee.

Dr. Freedman will serve as the 88th President of the American College of Chest Physicians in 2026.

Immediate Past President: Doreen J. Addrizzo-Harris, MD, FCCP

Doreen J. Addrizzo-Harris, MD, FCCP

Doreen J. Addrizzo-Harris, MD, FCCP, is a pulmonary/critical care physician with an extensive background in bronchiectasis and nontuberculous mycobacterial infection and medical education. Dr. Addrizzo-Harris is currently a Professor of Medicine at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She serves as the Associate Division Director for Clinical and Faculty Affairs and is the Co-Director of the NYULH Bronchiectasis and NTM Clinical and Translational Program. She is also serving in her 23rd year as the Program Director of NYU’s Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship.

Dr. Addrizzo-Harris received her medical degree and completed her residency and fellowship training at New York University School of Medicine. Since completing her training, she was recruited to stay as a faculty member at NYU, where she has been a critical presence over the past 27 years. She has been instrumental in educating the next generation of pulmonary/critical care physicians and has won a number of awards for her teaching skills, most recently, the 2020 first place Program Director of the ATS Best Practice Program. Dr. Addrizzo-Harris has served on the board of the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD), including serving as President from 2006-2007. Academically, she authored 48 peer-reviewed publications and 70 scientific abstracts presented at international conferences. She has participated in numerous clinical trials, many as the principal investigator. Dr. Addrizzo-Harris has been recognized as a Distinguished CHEST Educator each year since that program’s inception in 2017 and has received CHEST’s Distinguished Service Award in 2019 and Master Clinician Educator Award in 2021.

During her leadership tenure with CHEST, Dr. Addrizzo-Harris has served on the Marketing Committee, the Health and Science Policy Committee (Chair from 2007-2009), Government Relations Committee, Scientific Program Committee, Education Committee, Governance Committee, Editorial Board for CHEST Physician, Professional Standards Committee (Chair 2016-2018), Board of Regents, and CHEST Foundation Board of Trustees. Most recently, Dr. Addrizzo-Harris served as the President of the CHEST Foundation from 2018-2019 and Co-Chair of the Foundation Awards Committee from 2015-2020. Dr. Addrizzo-Harris was the sixth woman to lead the American College of Chest Physicians as the 85th President.
